What to look for in a welder for Beginners

Have had exceptional luck with my Century 160A 220V. However it about 15 years old, And have completed tasks using practices NOT recommended by manufacturer such as too long stinger lead. Wire feed rate would surge a tad when starting running straight up on unclean rafter purlin about 15' up.but...

    New to Hobart.

First thought that comes to mind is- 1; Amperage is too high for the wire speed=burnback. Try cranking up the wire feed rate and see what happens. 2; wire diameter too small for amperage; crank it up (one can lay some bead with .023, but you really have the wheels humming right along.) 3...

    Mig gases

Real Estate answer-It depends. Concur with CB above post. There are lots of variables. For aluminum 100% argon is pretty much the norm. I have never run helium, but understand it is used is some instances. For ferrous metals 75/25 is my preference. Anything over 50% co2 gets a tad messy (like...

    Best welder for soft metal?

A word of caution concerning any electric welds on equipment with any solid state devices (such as glow plug controllers on diesels.) They do not like magnetic fields floating around in the system. Disconnect battery cables. Ask me how I know. LOL TLee

    wire sticking

Wire sticking to nozzle can be caused by several things. if your wire feed "speed" too slow, it can stick to hot side of feed(burn back). Some others are- not enough amperage, too much amperage, (most common)dirty weld area(rust, paint, and general junk) causes HAZ (heat affected zone) to get...

Is MIG welding the easiest to learn?

MIG is certainly the least difficult to learn. The welding process is rather addictive, and is an art and a science. Mastering multi processes can be quite enlightening and financially rewarding. And yes, there are MIG machines "can be" powerful enough to complete most, if not all joining...
