I posted this photo over in my thread about welding a 2" receiver onto a 1.25" stinger.
This vise had home-made copper jaw liners in it when I found it buried in junk in the back of the barn. One of Dad's many yard sale finds, one of five good vises I found there. The serrations in the vise's original jaws are immaculate so the liners must have been there since new. I suppose the purpose for the liners was a soft grip on a workpiece.
I mounted the vise on a HF grinder stand. This makes a great portable welding jig.
I think the copper jaw liners improve grounding to the workpiece, as well as protecting the vise from slag and grinder nicks.
Anybody ever seen a vise adapted this way for welding?
