What to look for in a welder for Beginners

What Welding Seabee said. Learn SMAW (stick). The machines are cheap and after that the rest is easy. I agree with his recommendations for electrodes. That's the basics. And any Seabee has been through it and knows what to do. Just jump in and try it. And take a community college adult education...

    Suggestion

I've seen posts quoted and tried to quote them. Couldn't figure out how. Am I just dumb? (opportunity to bash) Used to VBulletin where it's fairly straight forward. I like the look of this better tho.

    GenSet

Oh! and those Perkins engines are nearly bullet proof. I've got several of them here at the farm.

StuckRod, your minimalist equipment is all you need. I used to work as a construction millwright building sawmills and all we had was a cutting torch, stick welder and a grinder. And grinder use was frowned upon. I worked with guys who would give me a hard time if the slag from my cuts couldn't...

    Beginner set up

I agree with StuckRod. I learned to weld when I was 12. My dad bought a farm and realized he needed to be able to weld. He took me along with him to a Community College Adult Education Course at the local high school. He never learned to weld worth a damn but I did. He did the cutting and layout...

    New Welder Purchase

I bought the ESAB Rebel EMP 285ic. Love it. Shop around, I don't know what the dealers in Sweden charge but there's sometimes a lot of difference in price. I'd like to hear what you decide on.

What Are Your Must-Have Welding Tools?

Good point Bumper. I've seen a chop saw blade that does good clean cuts fast. Trying to remember the name of it. Anyone seen that woman April who has a build channel on Youtube? She started with wood and is now working with steel too? Great channel, her enthusiasm and creativity are fun to watch.

    Easy project for young welder

I like the welding table idea too. Also carts with big wheels for any welding equipment. Growing up I saw a lot of cutting torch carts with car tires and axles that had the center of pivot/gravity just right for dragging them around a gravel lot or driveway.

    New Welder Purchase

I've worn out many MillerMatic wire machines both single phase and three phase. Then I went for a long time in suburbia in the tech industry with no welder, need for it, or shop. When I started farming I bought a used Lincoln SP-110 just like yours and got a lot of work out of it but it just...

What Are Your Must-Have Welding Tools?

Great posts! As my father in law is famous for saying "you can't have too many clamps". Which fortunately my wife often quotes him and consequently I have very many clamps. As Rancher Ed said, Angle Grinders. I'd expand on that to say that it's best to have an angle grinder for every...

    What is this?

Never seen one of those, and I've seen some weird things. My gut reaction is that it's bait to trap a curious alien. Put it out in a lonely spot with an LED strobe so they are sure to see it. They couldn't resist it! Set game cameras all around as we wouldn't want to actually trap an alien. Just...

    Off road welding cart

That's a pretty sweet welder ride! I like the finished look. Where did you find those nice front casters? My farm is gravel everywhere except the shop and I'd like to update the cart the Esab came with so I could take it outside.

    Brush Grapple Fabrication

Wow that's beautiful work! I like that you put a nice finish coat of paint on it too. I have never understood fabricators and repair guys who send things out the door ready to rust. I always clean things up and put some paint on it. One of those would look good on the bucket of my Caterpillar...
