I need to dill (and tap) a couple of holes in a a .125" X .75" x X" piece of steel and I'm having difficulty 'nailing it.'

So I thought to ask here to see if there was a trick, approach, tool I needed to learn or purchase to help me assure my two holes were in the right places.

Anyone?

Thanks for reading.

Woodworkers use a tool that cuts (scribes) a line a set distance from the shoulder of the Marking Gauge (is what its called). I recently had the same situation (1/8th x 3/4" mild steel) and set the gauge to 3/8" (as close as (this) human could do it) then checked it by marking at another place on the stock first from one edge, then from the opposite edge. Once satisfied that, regardless the edge I measured from, the scribe point landed in the same spot (center!) I used it to scribe a line in the center of my stock.

As to the center of X I'd drill right where the two lines meet ;)
